The Viper That Smiles
We often look for red flags in the form of overt cruelty, loud arguments, or obvious malice. But the most dangerous deceptions rarely arrive looking like a threat. Most times they come wrapped in warmth, disguised as safety, and coated in the euphoria of love and kindness.
True deception doesn't just break your heart; it plays tricks on your reality. It makes you compromise your own intuition until you can no longer tell the difference between a solid foundation and shifting sand.
I wrote this piece to capture that exact, heartbreaking awakening. It shows us the moment the illusion shatters; and you realise that the brightest light you were chasing was actually a warning sign.
It reflects the painful dawn of truth after a long period of blindness; the moment you realise that you built a life on shifting sand.
When shattered illusions fall away, relationship lies that were hidden right behind the eyes are uncovered.
Deception
The most terrible of lies are the ones coated in the euphoria of love and kindness.
The viper that smiles its way into your heart,
The one that might never be unravelled in this lifetime...
...unless you learn to see through the eyes of the Spirit.
Listen to this story, will you?
Building a house on shifting sand,
Called it a foundation
Stared right into my eyes and spoke...
...little somethings, sweet nothings
"In this life, I will never leave you"
But were you truly ever mine?
Your weakness beckoned my strength
Not for support, but for gain
A call to break masked in smiles
Slowly chipping at my roots
Surely chiselling away my essence.
My foolish soul basked in your naked light
Marvelling at the glint of your eyes
"This is love"
I said to my compromised heart
But alas, I forgot
Satan also sometimes does shine!
A true imitation of the angel of light.
A broken promise in the dark
A dying flame, A dying spark
And the truth came rushing into my soul
The most terrible of lies
Is the one hidden behind the eyes.
Finding Clarity After the Storm
The hardest part of surviving a deceptive relationship isn't just losing the person; it is recovering from the erosion of your essence. When someone slowly chips away at your roots while smiling, you begin to doubt your own judgment.
But there is a profound power in the awakening. When the truth finally rushes into your soul, it brings a sharp, painful clarity. It more or less forces you to look beyond surface-level charm and develop deeper spiritual discernment. The flame may have died; but the light left behind ensures you will never be fooled by a counterfeit shine again.
